Special Care Nursery

The Special Care Nursery provides holistic care to newborn babies admitted directly from the maternity ward or emergency department.

Who we care for

Our Special Care Nursery (SCN) provides care for babies who are too unwell, premature and/or small to be managed in the maternity ward.

What you can expect

Care of your newborn baby will be provided around the clock by a dedicated team of specialists. This team will engage with you to develop a plan of care and guide you through every step of the way.

This SCN team can deliver immediate resuscitation and stabilisation of very unwell infants. We can provide ongoing care until a newborn can be transferred to a neonatal intensive care unit if required.

Babies who are very unwell or born more than 8 weeks before their due date, will be stabilised and transferred to Melbourne. If your baby needs to go to a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in Melbourne, they will be transported under the care of a neonatal doctor and intensive care nurse. In this situation, Grampians Health will assist you in your own transfer to Melbourne.

There are no restrictions on visiting hours for parents, however all other visitors must adhere to the Nursery’s visiting hours from 2.00pm-8.00pm and instructions.
