Overview

Referrals can be made for patients with any of the following:

  • a CT Chest or Chest X-ray that is suspicious of lung cancer
  • haemoptysis or other concerning or persistent symptoms, even if their CT Chest or X-ray is normal
  • a confirmed lung cancer diagnosis

Red flags for lung cancer

Any of the following unexplained, persistent signs or symptoms lasting more than three weeks (or less than three weeks in people with known risk factors) are indications for an urgent CT Chest and/or X-ray

  • Haemoptysis 
  • Persistent new or changed cough  
  • Shortness of breath  
  • Hoarseness of voice  
  • Weight loss or loss of appetite  
  • Signs of pleural effusion  
  • Unresolved chest infection  
  • Chest or shoulder pain  
  • Abnormal chest signs  
  • Finger clubbing  
  • Cervical and/or supraclavicular lymphadenopathy  
  • Features suggestive of metastasis from a lung cancer 

Persistent/massive haemoptysis and/or signs of superior vena cava obstruction and/or signs of stridor require immediate referral to an emergency department. 

Referral process

The Clinic is MBS-funded, so a referral to a named specialist is required. Please use the BHS SMART referral template where possible.

Referral requirements

  • History of presenting signs and symptoms 
  • Smoking status 
  • Past medical history, including current medications and allergies 
  • All prior relevant investigations and imaging 
  • Relevant psychology history 
  • Up-to-date patient contacts 

Please include/attach the following results: 

  • Results of CT Chest and/or Chest X-ray and location of provider if outside of GH (essential) 
  • Full Blood examination: FBE, U&E, LFT, CMP, Coagulation Profile
