Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

The ICU is a specialised area designed to care for patients who are critically ill. A wide variety of diseases may lead to critical illness.

Who we care for

We look after intensive care patients who are seriously unwell, coronary care patients, complex medical and surgical patients, unwell infants and children and those who require close observation.

Intensive care patients generally fit into one of the following categories:

  • Patients at high risk of deterioration and require intensive monitoring
  • Patients who have had a major surgical procedure
  • Patients who require very intense nursing care or treatment not available on the ward
  • Patients with an acute, potentially reversible, critical illness requiring organ support

What you can expect

A critical illness is a condition where life cannot be sustained without invasive therapeutic interventions. Patients will have monitoring equipment at the bedside, some of which may be connected to the patient.

Please see site pages for detailed visitor information for Ballarat and Horsham.

No flowers in the ICU unit please, for infection control reasons.
