Grampians BreastScreen

Grampians BreastScreen is your local breast screening provider.

As part of BreastScreen Victoria, we aim to reduce the impact of breast cancer and save lives through early detection.

Who we care for

BreastScreen Victoria offers free screening for women over 40, who have no symptoms. Breast screening is most effective for those aged 50 to 74. More than 75% of breast cancers occur in women over 50.

In the Grampians region breast screening is available in Ballarat (Queen Elizabeth Centre), Horsham, Hamilton and Maryborough at fixed sites and many locations where the mobile BreastScreen Victoria van visits.

What you can expect

Regular breast screens are the best way to detect breast cancer early. We encourage you to have regular screenings and be proactive about your health and wellbeing.

Our highly qualified  team will support you through the screening process, which takes only 10 minutes. A female radiographer will take you into the screening room. When you are ready, they will take two pictures of each breast, four in total. You will stand in front of a special X-ray machine, and the radiographer will gently position each breast on a plate. Another plate will press your breast firmly to take the image. The steps will be repeated to take a side view of the breast.

It’s normal to feel some pressure during a breast screen, but this should only last a few seconds. Your radiographer will work with you to ensure the screening is as comfortable as possible. You can always ask to stop the screen at any time.
