Fluoroscopy is a type of medical imaging that shows continuous X-ray images on a monitor, much like an X-ray movie.
For most procedures a contrast agent (that is barium or iodine based) may be used to highlight areas of interest for the test.
We provide services to anyone needing a fluoroscopy test or procedure.
We will inform you if any preparation is needed for your fluoroscopy. For some procedures, you will need to fast (no food) for 4 hours, but you can continue to drink fluids before the appointment.
If you are, or think you may be, pregnant, please tell your doctor and radiographer as X-rays can be harmful to an unborn baby. An alternate test may be an option.
The length of the procedure can vary—from about 10 minutes to a few hours—depending on how complex the exam is. Your radiographer will let you know approximately how long it will take on the day.
In many cases, a contrast agent (such as barium or iodine) is used to help highlight certain areas on the images. The radiographer and radiologist will explain if this is needed and what it involves.
During the procedure, the radiologist will guide you through each step. You may be asked to lie down or stand in different positions to help capture the best pictures.
You will be able to go home immediately after your test if you have no other medical conditions/concerns that require treatment. You may resume eating and drinking as normal unless otherwise directed.
