Grampians Health conference sheds light on critical themes shaping palliative care

Wednesday, 15 May 2024

The Grampians Regional Palliative Care Team’s 2024 conference, held from 1 May to 3 May 2024, explored key themes and factors shaping the provision of palliative care.

Held under the theme ‘Back to the Future – Past, Present and Future – directions in palliative care’, the event set the stage for conversations among healthcare professionals about advancements in palliative care and its prospects. Violet Platt, CEO of Palliative Care Victoria, provided the opening address at the conference.

Palliative care is offered to those experiencing a life-limiting illness and where treatment options are limited. However, it is not just limited to physical care or end-of-life care, but palliative care aims to improve the quality of life for patients and families.

“Palliative care is not just about managing symptoms; it’s about providing holistic support to individuals and their families during one of the most challenging times of their lives,” said Ben Kelly, Chief Operating Officer, Hospitals, Grampians Health.

“The importance of palliative care cannot be overstated, especially in light of our aging population and the increasing complexity of healthcare needs. This conference provided an invaluable opportunity to reflect on our progress and learn from each other on how best to impart care.”

The conference, held ahead of National Palliative Care Week 2024, focused on several theme such as inequalities and initiatives for aging populations, psychosocial dimensions in palliative care, digital trends shaping palliative care and future innovations within the sector. It also sparked conversations on drawing lessons from the past to inform future strategies and approaches in palliative care provision.

Palliative care has witnessed remarkable growth in Australia over the past four decades, and the conference delved deep into this journey while exploring the emerging themes transforming palliative care and how healthcare professionals can further improve the delivery of care.

Australia is experiencing a significant demographic shift with an aging population, resulting in increased demand for palliative care services. According to a 2023 Australian Institute of Health and Welfare report, the number of palliative care services received by Australians in their own home almost doubled between 2015–16 and 2019–20.

“As the demand for palliative care services rises, we hope that by sharing insights and experiences, we can collectively address the challenges ahead and ensure that every individual receives the compassionate care they deserve, regardless of their circumstances,” Regina Kendall, Nurse Practitioner, Grampians Regional Palliative Care team.
