Grampians Health is delighted to announce that three employees who are part of special care nursery’s (SCN) nursing team have been awarded the highly esteemed Albert Coates Memorial Trust Scholarships to advance their professional development.

Manju Jose, assistant nursing unit manager of SCN, along with registered nurses at SCN Belinda Howlett and Casey Moore are the recipients of this prestigious scholarship.

The scholarships, sponsored by the Albert Coates Memorial Trust and supported through a generous donation from the Leckie Family, are provided to support nurses and midwives studying for a Special Care Nursery Clinical Nurse qualification.

“I am extremely grateful to be a recipient of the Albert Coates Memorial Scholarship in 2023,” said Ms Howlett. “Being able to work in Special Care with families and their newborn babies is an absolute privilege, and this scholarship for postgraduate education allows me to further develop my knowledge and skills while building the confidence to deliver outstanding care.”

The Albert Coates Memorial Trust, established in 1998, aims to commemorate the life and accomplishments of Sir Albert Coates, an eminent Australian surgeon and soldier.

The trust offers scholarships to nursing and medical professionals across several esteemed institutions, including Grampians Health, Federation University Australia, University of Melbourne, Australian Catholic University, University of Notre Dame, and Deakin University.

“The Albert Coates Memorial Trust and the Leckie family are delighted to continue the vision of Albert Coates in supporting and encouraging excellence in emergency care. We are especially delighted this 5-year scholarship is focusing on Special Care nursery post graduate nursing so enhancing the care of neonates in regional Victoria,” said Desley Beechey, Albert Coates Trust member.

The Leckie Family, who have contributed to the scholarships in memory of their late brother Ken Leckie, has said that their contribution was to honour late Mr Leckie’s wishes to support nursing scholarships.

“The scholarships and the partnership with the Albert Coates Memorial Trust exemplify our commitment to supporting the professional growth and development of our employees in delivering outstanding care to the community,” said Leanne Shea, Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer, Grampians Health.

“We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Manju Jose, Belinda Howlett, and Casey Moore for their exceptional achievement in securing the Albert Coates Scholarships.”
