Grampians Health delivers new maternity service to Horsham

Monday, 05 December 2022

Grampians Health is pleased to announce it will open the doors to a new free maternity outpatient clinic in Horsham next week, as it seeks to offer new models of care for women who are pregnant in the Grampians region.

The maternity outpatient clinic, which will open on 7 December, will be located at 20 McLachlan Street Horsham and will provide services such as lactation support as well as antenatal care, and provide the base for our postnatal care-in-the-home team.

The clinic will also offer pregnancy, labour, birth, postnatal and breastfeeding education programs.

“The clinic is easily accessible because of its location in the Horsham CBD and has been designed with maternity consumers to be a family friendly space,” project lead Michelle Coutts said.

The clinic will provide continuity of care to those who will have increased choice in how their pregnancy is managed in a collaborative service.

“It is important that people are able to make informed choices throughout their pregnancy, labour, birth and postnatal period and we believe that this clinic will play a significant role in this,” said Carolyn Robertson, Deputy Chief Operating Officer Hospitals – West, Grampians Health.

The clinic was established in response to a review of Grampians Health’s maternity service in Horsham and will meet the needs voiced by maternity consumers in Horsham and the surrounding regions.

Last year, Wimmera Health Care Group – which is now a part of Grampians Health – formed a Maternity Consumer Advisory Group to gather feedback to design a contemporary maternity service that meets the current and future needs of birthing families in the Wimmera region.

Mrs Coutts said the new clinic is part of a plan to revitalise maternity services at Grampians Health Horsham.

The new maternity model of care due to commence early next year will maximise the skills of Grampians Health Horsham’s highly trained midwifery team and allow them to work across their full scope of practice.

“This clinic and the new model of maternity care will improve collaboration between the obstetric, midwifery and allied health workforce to meet the needs of pregnant people and babies and ensure Grampians Health Horsham provide safe and high-quality maternity care that fits within the maternity and newborn capability framework for Grampians Health Horsham,” Mrs Coutts said.
