Pharmacy internships

Our pharmacy internship program provides interns with a wealth of learning opportunities, helping you achieve your goal of becoming a registered pharmacist. It is designed to promote the highest level of clinical knowledge and improve dispensing and manufacturing accuracy.

Overview

Grampians Health offers 4-6 pharmacy intern positions each year. Interns are based at our Ballarat campus, with 1-2 mandatory rotations to our Horsham campus.

We are a credentialed training site for both the Monash Intern Foundation Program (IFP) and Advanced Pharmacy Australia’s Resident and Registrar training programs.

As an intern, we will provide you with access to:

  • more than 40 pharmacists with a diverse range of clinical backgrounds and specialties
  • a relaxed, friendly, supportive working environment
  • weekly tutorials based on a mix of clinical, primary healthcare and process-driven tutorials
  • practice exams commencing in August, with board certified examiners involved
  • rotations to speciality practice areas including dialysis, oncology and haematology, cardiology, intensive care, paediatrics and neonatology, aseptic manufacturing and Grampians at Home
  • your own individual preceptor who has undertaken Monash University’s Clinical Educator Course

Tutorials and training

Pharmacy interns have access to weekly tutorials from our range of pharmacists. These cover disease states, primary health care, drug classes and exam preparation.

  • Weekly tutorials are conducted throughout the intern year
  • Primary care tutorials are intern led, with a supervising pharmacist always present
  • Clinical tutorials are conducted by Grampians Health pharmacists and Senior Medical and Nursing staff who often have speciality knowledge and experience in the field

Rotations

Interns rotate around various areas of our pharmacy department. Clinical rotations are usually 4-6 weeks. Operational and elective rotations are usually 2-3 weeks. Rotations include a 4-6 week placement at our Horsham campus.

Rotations occur in the following areas:

  • General Medicine
  • General Surgery and Surgical Speciality units
  • Emergency and Short Stay unit
  • Subacute services (Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit, Geriatric Inpatient Unit and Palliative Care Unit)
  • Antimicrobial Stewardship
  • Dispensary (inpatients and outpatients)
  • Elective (e.g. aseptic manufacturing, Mental Health, Paediatrics, Dialysis)

Individual feedback and goal setting sessions follow each rotation to progress your learning. These sessions also encourage self-reflection on practice and plan for continuing professional development opportunities.
